John Snow's Ghost Map

A Father of Epedemiology is a Father of GIS?

GIS techniques for data overlay, reference and querying allows for better problem solving.

The 1854 London Cholera 'Ghost Map' of Soho by John Snow is the first recorded use of 'GIS' to solve a mystery.  By recording the location of each death, as well as which pump those residents used as a source of water, the source of the Cholera epidemic was found to be the Broad Street water pump, which was polluted from the human waste collected in the basements of buildings nearby filtering into the groundwater.  An interesting note, the Brewery across the street had no cholera victims, because they all drank beer!

Even with such hard evidence, it took over 50 years to convince the local, scientific and medical communities that Cholera was a water-born illness from fecal contamination, instead of the commonly held "bad air" theory.  John Snow came to the correct conclusion only after discovering the pattern of the spread of the disease through water.
